Hi,

My name is Olivia Hylton-Pennant and I’m the Access Officer for Cambridge University Students’ Union – the only full-time student role of this kind in the UK. My role sees me sitting on a number of senior committees concerning widening participation to the University of Cambridge.

I am writing to you to let you know about a conference that I am running aimed at students of Caribbean descent in Yrs 10 – 12.

Disadvantaged students of Caribbean descent are one of the the least likely groups to progress to higher education, with fewer still making it to the top universities.

I know that Cambridge has a real issue engaging with and attracting applications from students of Caribbean descent with Black Caribbean students typically applying in double figures and being admitted in single figures. Only once in the past four years were students admitted in double figures.

A recent briefing from OFFA on BME Students also draws attention to this noting that:

“The proportion of Black Caribbean and White and Black Caribbean students entering a higher tariff institution is the lowest of all groups, even lower than White British.”

“Even among the highest socio-economic quintile, the Black Caribbean and Other Black background groups have the smallest proportions of entrants into highly selective institutions.”

As one a handful of undergraduates of Caribbean descent studying at the University of Cambridge I’m really keen to work towards changing this.

Attendees of the CUSU Caribbean Students’ Conference will get the chance to take part in academic sessions and hear from students currently at top universities across the country. There’ll also be a session for parents and carers to offer an insight into how to best support their young people.

The flyer for the conference is attached to this email.

I’d really appreciate it if you could circulate this widely with your networks as well as encouraging any students that meet the criteria to apply.

The deadline for applications is this Thursday – February 1st 2018.

All the best,

Olivia
